Vegetarianism/veganism
How my view has changed
I was vegetarian for a few years after watching this film: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cowspiracy
TL;DR it takes a lot more resources to produce meat compared to vegetables, and this is causing severe damage and resource strain to the earth.
About the suffering of animals, the most interesting take I've heard is that plants suffer too, being grown under commercial agriculture, forced to live and die in fixed cycles, sprayed with tons of insecticides etc. The only reason why people sympathise more with animals is because they look and react in a more human way. Same reason why an adorable deer bleeding to death, would evoke more reaction than a fish on a trawler suffocating to death.
So I feel that a deeper engagement with the ethics of food will come from a position of honouring all life.
And this can happen only when our connection to the environment is no longer seen in terms of pure resource management, but with more empathy and immersion.
